The 4 C's were created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and are now the universal language for describing diamond quality worldwide. Understanding them gives you the power to compare diamonds objectively — and find the one that's perfect for you.
First C
Cut
Cut is the most important of the 4 C's — it determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond will sparkle even if it has slight imperfections in color or clarity. Cut refers not to the shape of the diamond, but to the precision of its proportions, symmetry, and polish.
GIA Cut Grades
Maximum brilliance and fire. The benchmark for cut quality.
Exceptional sparkle at a slightly lower price point.
Above average brilliance — a smart value choice.
Light leaks from the sides or bottom. Not recommended.
💡 LA Diamond recommends: Always prioritise Excellent or Very Good cut. No other C can compensate for a poor cut.
Second C
Color
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the more rare and valuable it is. The difference between adjacent grades is subtle and often invisible to the untrained eye.
💡 LA Diamond recommends: G–H color offers the best balance of quality and value — near-colorless to the naked eye, especially in white gold or platinum settings.
Third C
Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes within a diamond. These are natural birthmarks formed during a diamond's creation deep within the earth. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye.
GIA Clarity Scale
Flawless / Internally Flawless — extremely rare.
Very Very Slightly Included — inclusions invisible even under 10x.
Very Slightly Included — excellent eye-clean value.
Slightly Included — often eye-clean at SI1. Inspect before buying.
💡 LA Diamond recommends: VS1–VS2 or SI1 offers the best value. Eye-clean diamonds in these grades are beautiful and significantly more affordable than FL.
Fourth C
Carat
Carat is the unit of weight used to measure a diamond — not its size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. While a larger carat weight generally means a larger diamond, the actual size you see depends heavily on the shape and cut of the stone. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can appear very different in size.
💡 LA Diamond recommends: Consider going slightly below a "magic number" (e.g. 0.90 ct instead of 1.00 ct) — you save significantly with virtually no visible difference in size.
Putting It All Together
No single C defines a diamond. The art is in the balance — a well-cut G/VS1 diamond will outshine a poorly cut D/FL stone every time. Our expert team is here to help you find the ideal combination for your budget and style.
